Blepharoplasty London – Cosmetic Eyelid Surgery

Thursday, November 20th, 2008

Cosmetic Eyelid surgery, known as Blepharoplasty in America, is perhaps the most common form of plastic surgery. This procedure is designed to eliminate excess fatty tissue, and skin, that can sometimes be found around the eye and the curvature of the lower and upper eyelids. The aim is to reduce the sagging and puffiness from around the eyes that tends to make people look older. The popular belief is that Blepharoplasty will remove dark circles, wrinkles, crows feet or lift your brows, this is not the case. If this is the result you are looking for then you will have to combine your eyelid surgery with other forms of facial cosmetic surgery.

Just as in other types of cosmetic surgery there is a certain amount of risk with Blepharoplasty surgery. The most common, but minor, risks are connected to the side effects, which include a certain amount of blurred vision, some temporary swelling, and a few days of mild pain. However, there are some real dangers involved.

As with all forms of surgery there is the inherent danger of complications during surgery. Some patients also react badly to general anesthesia. After the surgery there is also the possibility of infection. While serious complications are rare, you would be well advised to consult your cosmetic surgeon and make sure you understand all the risks associated with your chosen procedure.

Before your cosmetic eyelid surgery, you will have the opportunity to have at least one or two consultations with your cosmetic surgeon. The Surgeon will talk you through how the operation will proceed and what results you can reasonably expect. In most clinics you will be given the opportunity to view digitally enhanced pictures of the predicted post op results of your eyelid surgery. This is so that you and your surgeon understand exactly what you want from the procedure.

At the pre-operation consultation, you will be told what you can or cannot eat and drink on the day of cosmetic surgery, and the fact that you will require a driver to take you home after surgery and help you for a few days while you recover your Vision as you may experience can still be blurred.

The first step in your operation, the anesthesia, will either be local or general, and you and your doctor need to decide on this in advance.

The operation itself will be carried out in a private clinics surgical suite, or it can also be done in a hospital, if you want. It, normally, takes between one and four hours, depending on your specific procedure.

The Blepharoplasty will begin with the cosmetic surgeon making small cuts around the eyes to lift the skin from the underlying tissue. In addition to any skin being cut away, any unwanted fatty substances will be removed. When this is completed the incision will closed.
